W&W Wardrobe - Jess Steel

W&W Wardrobe - Jess Steel

If you haven't heard of Jess Steel then you are going to want to spend some time getting acquainted with her.

With one of the best voices we've ever heard and a sense of style to match, we just couldn't wait to delve into her wardrobe this month. She has a passion for all things groovy and 60's influenced, never shying away from colour or pattern. We just love her infectious personality and devil may care attitude, she's truly one of the kindest and most humble ladies we know and we're proud to call her our friend.

Lets go Jess...!

Tell us what you do?

Hi! I'm a full time hairdresser with my own hair salon, Rock the Barnet, in York. I'm also an established singer and have done loads of gigs at venues in and around York, including weddings and gigs supporting charities close to my heart.

Describe your personal style for us?

My style is heavily 60's influenced but I like to add a modern twist to my look.

Who is your biggest style inspiration?

I get a lot of inspiration from a number of 60's icons such as Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Mary Quant and Jean Shrimpton.

How often do you shop?

I tend to shop at least once a week, its so easy (and dangerous!) nowadays with online shopping. I've been told recently that I'm quite good at shopping!

What has been your biggest fashion faux pas?

I bought some baggy, comfy dungarees once from Amazon. They looked amazing on the model featured on the website but sadly not so much on me. I looked more like I should be on kids TV. I now use them for housework, DIY and gardening, they're really comfortable so I had to keep them - plus they might work for fancy dress one day!

What's the one piece you always buy every single season?

I just love coats and boots, I'm a big fan of Dr Martens - I own around ten pairs of them in different colours. I also love coats and always treat myself to a new one each season.

What's the item you are guaranteed to wear at least once a week?

My go to is definitely a baggy dress with tights or leggings. I like to pair the look with either boots or Flip Flops depending on the weather.

Jumper or jacket?

I definitely wear more jackets, I have them in every shape and colour!

What are your favourite 'go to' brands?

I have a few brands that I always keep an eye on. Namely Vivienne Westwood, TopShop, Hippyshake, Warehouse and ASOS. I've also recently just discovered SHEIN and become a little bit obsessed with it.

Describe your weekend style?

My style doesn't really change from weekday to weekends. I love dressing up and experimenting with lots of bright colours, then adding matching headbands and  jewellery.

How has your style evolved over the years?

To be honest my style hasn't changed that much over the years. I've always loved to wear different looks since I was around 12 years of age. I guess I have lots more confidence in my look as I've got older.

What's your most treasured item?

A few years ago I treated myself to a blue Vivienne Westwood hand bag that I had my eye on. I now have a few of them as they go with everything and don't seem to date or go out of style. I'll have those forever!

Do you have a signature scent?

I love a strong stand out perfume, a few of my favourites are Alien or Angel by Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier Classique eu de parfum or Elle by Yves Saint Laurent.

Song currently on repeat?

This depends on my mood but I always put the soul stuff on, something to uplift like 'A Change is Gonna Come' by Sam Cooke or something to dance to, perhaps 'Soul Time' by Shirley Ellis.

Must read book recommendation?

Any Danielle Steel books - I have all the DVD's as well as many of her books (she isn't related to me, ha ha!)

What's on your bedside table right now?

My bedside table holds lots of books, hair grips (always a hairdresser!) a bottle of water and the remote control for my television.

Whose wardrobe do you covet the most?

I just adore Lady Gaga and her expressive artistic style (except the meat dress she wore at the 2010 MTV video music awards) and Jodie Comer in Killing Eve was literally killing it style wise for me.

Jane x
