Like most people who have lived in York for a long time I had heard of The French House but to my embarrassment I had never visited, so when we were asked if we would like to use their showroom for our Spring/Summer 19 shoot we jumped at the chance.
Located just outside York city centre this unassuming building hides a secret treasure trove of true vintage French chic furniture and decorative items. First was established in 1994 on Micklegate, York. The French House soon opened a second shop in South West London, then in 2008 the York shop moved to North Lane, Huntington. The French House boasts one of the largest ranges of French antiques in the UK, including a large selection of beds, mirrors, lights, tables – among many other treasures – ranging from the 17th to 20th Century. There are smaller decorative items available, pretty picture frames, French kier glasses, a range of French linens and other fabrics available. At the York shop, there is even a workshop for restoration projects, a full upholstery service and more bespoke pieces like one-off tables made to order with old timbers and custom-made frames and restoration of painted items.
There are very few shops that I go into these days where I am lost for words and covet literally everything in it but The French House had us distracted all day. As we wandered through the many rooms we spied little interior gems at every turn. I couldn’t begin to list everything that they have on offer and it seems that if it isn’t on display then the super friendly staff will find it for you.
